Treatment and Outcome
Treatments
Notes:
This dog developed an acute onset of vision loss ~ 5 weeks after starting BZYQT. He has some vision and is navigating around the house reasonable OK. Owner could not get into a specialist dT Covid; rDVM reports that labs are:
- ^ Chlolesterol 401
- ^ Calcium 11.8
- CBC normal
Normal Blood pressure, and normal eye pressures.
I've not seen dog for recheck (owner gone, then I was gone).
He tolerated the BZYQT symptom- wise. Could "tonification of an excess" have led to SARDS (presumed) or other acute cause of vision loss? Would the ^ cholesterol and time of year point to XFZYT and XCHT now? Feeling a little ill that I might have created this problem; wishing I'd pushed her to recheck sooner.
On a positive note, there is no recurrence of his pneumonia thus far !!
Thnx
:)Cathy

Notes:
Estimate ~ 80% vison loss. Menace absent OD, depressed OS. PLR poor. Possibly ^ tapedal reflection.
Pudgy (has gained weight), bilateral flank alopecia same. Michigan State Thyroid screen normal. Tongue; pink, sl. most. Pulse: deep, ~ feeble, slow. No return of cough. Is on BZYQT 3tabs BID (is 110 #, so perhaps should have more, but cost is limiting factor for owner).
Diet is largely canned or kibble
Notes:
Recurrent pneumonia is mostly controlled w/ XCHT at 3 tabs BID; around 3/1 we tried 2 tabs BID and he had ^ cough - rDVM rx'd antibiotics again. At 3 tabs BID he seems stable. . In January I added Si miao san + dang gui for polyphagia, excess weight, hot nature. Was suspect for Cushing's since SARDS type blindness in history. ACTH stimulations and LDDS normal. Unclear if symptom changes on SMS/DG, so now is weaning off. For borderline Thyroid panel numbers last fall, starting Thyroxine.
On BZYQT pulse had remained deeper and ~ feeble, is same at this exam. Is sweet, ~ 25 lbs overweight on appropriate calories (but dry food, as owner is unable to consider raw/cooked).
He may feel much better on Thyroxine, but I'm wondering if we can do better herb- wise also for pneumonia risk (he always seems on the edge of pneumonia recurrence, and yet the XCHT has saved him forma several rounds of Ab, I believe), weight, PP, hot nature, stubborn pulse.
Thnx!
