Treatment and Outcome

Problem Notes
  • Chronic Upper Respiratory Issue: When healthy, this 4 yr old Standardbred racing gelding is happy, loves to exercise and be groomed. At 2 years old he developed a respiratory disease and it flares up with mucoid/green/yellow thick discharge solely from the left nostril. During the flare up he is agitated, angry in the stall.
    Manure is normal.
His breathing as owner describes is 5/10 for shallow breaths. Feels his airways are not dilated as they should be.
The discharge occurs every 2 months since 2 years old and clears up.
    He currently takes no supplements
eats 20lbs of roughage daily (hay cubes and hay) 3 coffee cans full of sweet feed.
Owner says was out in field as 3 year old and just very "snotty"
Had horse scoped and sinuses ok but found some blood tinged areas and mucous ++
Borgal (apo-sulfatrim) clears it up almost each time but the duration is now much shorter according to owner. He has used another equine vet in the past.
    Tongue is pale and wet
Has 2 foot abscesses that surfaced 5 weeks ago.
