Carpal Laxity

Signalment

  • Species: dog

Disease Notes

  • Certainty: confirmed
  • Comments: Piper is an 8yo FS labradoodle

She has a 2 year history of chronic pain that seems to affect her hind limbs and cause limping that switches between left and right leg. Labwork and tick borne disease panel has always been negative. She has responded well (but not completely to chiropractic). She was referred back to her RDVM who added in pain control for her- she is currently taking only galliprant. Previously she has been on prednisone (short term use with one chronic pain episode) and NSAIDS.

She eats a fresh food diet (Farmers dog beef or pork) and is very active.

She presented with hyperextension bilaterally of both carpi, no pain or effusion in the joints. Remainder of joints/orthopedic exam was unremarkable). Neutral temperature of body, limbs, ears. She preferred the cool floor over our mat in the room. Tongue was darker pink (not quite red) at the LIV/GB region with slight lavender region at the SP/ST region. Pulses had good tone, rapid, symmetrical, slight wiry component possible, but felt pretty balanced to me. She is an earth-fire in her personality. very sweet and gentle, but will bark if you stop petting her, or allowing her to lay up agains your body.

She has a tendency to be a picky eater and softer stools that have improved on fresh whole foods. No other significant medical history.

I have not approached carpal laxity, but would assume I need to be supporting the LIV/GB system in my approach, but also see some Spleen Qi def with the soft stools. Wondering the best approach for this sweet girl with both acupuncture and herbals.

    I really appreciate your input!
