Treatment and Outcome

Problem Notes
  • Undiagnosed Alopecia: Stryker is a 4 year-old intact male Boston Terrier who was treated surgically for a urethral prolapse in November, 2025, No other abnormalities were noted at the time of surgery and in subsequent tests. Shortly after the surgery, Stryker began loosing fur on his neck. This has progressed and currently he has alopecia on his neck, chest, and abdomen and is starting to lose hair on his back. In addition, the areas on his front legs that were shaved for surgery have not grown back hair. The areas of alopecia are pink and warm. His overall body feels warm. He had blood chemistries done at his primary veterinarian. They were normal including T4. These areas are not at all pruritic.
Tongue is red. Pulse is wiry and irregular. Shen is good. I did a skin scrape on initial exam that was negative. I have treated him several times with acupuncture and Shao Yang points and Heat clearing points have improved the pulse. He is on a high quality kibble that is supplemented with meat. I have tried Si Miao San because of the excess Heat and Xiao Chai Hu Tang because of the Heat above, prolapse below, and response to Shao Yang points. Most recently, I have tried Bu Gan Tang for alopecia X
Nothing is helping this guy. I would be very interested in any insights or suggestions. Thank you.
