Day 0

Notes:  Unable to use hind legs for the past week. Owner has been treating with prednisone and Chai Ge Jia Ji Tang. Still wags her tail and has voluntary BM.

EXAMINATION
Unable to stand on hind legs, severe knuckling on both hind legs, no withdrawal response bilaterally, full urinary bladder easily expressed.
PULSE weak superficial
TONGUE dry, pale-pink-lavender
Active points BL 20 – BL 23 bilaterally.

ASSESSMENT
IVDD at Tljunction T12 – L2

TREATMENTS
Acupuncture: Hua Tuo Jia Ji (T11 – L4), BL-11, BL-28, Lui Feng both hind legs, BL-40
Du Huo Jie Sheng Tang 0.5g BID

Acupuncture points were stimulated


Day 2

Notes:  decreased appetite and water intake this morning. Fixations in low lumbar and sacral regions.
If placed on hind feed able to weight bear with min. support.
PULSE: slippery before adjustments, bounding after adjustments. TONGUE - not assessed.
ASSESMENT:
Some improvement in hind end strength.

TREATMENT:
acupuncture: BL 40, BL 27 (both sedate) BL 23 tonify
Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5 ml TID - QID.

recommended daily acupuncture treatments.

Diet is largely canned or kibble

Day 3

Notes:  
Able to support weight on hind legs when stood up. Bladder still very easily expressed.
EXAMINATION:
PULSE: weak and toned.
active points: BL-23, BL-25, BL-40

TREATMENT:
acupuncture: BL 23 tonify, BL 40 sedate, GB 41 tonify, BL 60 sedate.
continue Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5ml TID - QID.

Day 4

Notes:  Voided urine on the light palpation of the bladder. Malodorous urine, pyuria.
Much improved strength in hind limbs. Able to stand through the whole treatment with mild propping. Single voluntary movement of the RH leg noted.

TREATMENT: acupuncture BL 40 (sedate), GB 27, BL 23 tonify
Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5ml TID
Baytril 25mg SID 14 days for UTI.

Day 6

Notes:  Owner reports improved movement in hind legs.

EXAMINATION: bladder expressed with moderate effort
PULSE toned, thin,
Fixations at T10, L1 - L4 adjusted with VOM => small pulse improvement

ASSESMENT: much improved strength and some improvement in mobility of hind legs.

TREATMENT:
acupuncture BL 23 tonify, BL 25 tonify, BL 40, GB 41 sedate, LUI FENG bilateral X3 (leg movement noted on acupuncture of these points).
Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5 ml TID, baytril 25 mg SID

Day 9

Notes:  Moving energetically using front legs. Increased withdrawal reflexes in both hind legs.
PULSE weak, toneless
fixations at T11 - L5 and LS junction. Adjusted with VOM.

ACUPUNCTURE:
BL23 tonify BL 40 tonify, GB41 sedate, GB27 tonify, HUA TUO JIA JI T12-L2, SI 3, LUI FENG bilaterally.

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5 g BID, BENEFIT HIPS AND KNEES 1 ml BID

Day 12

Notes:  lots of strength in hind legs, good withdrawals on both hind legs.
PULSE weak, decreased tone TONGUE: dry. lavender.

TREATMENT:
ACUPUNCTURE: BL 23 tonify, GB27 tonify, BL 40, GB41 tonify, SI 3 tonify, HUA TUO JIA JI at T9 - T11, LUI FENG bilaterally hind legs, GB 20, GB21.

owner is to continue passive range of motion exercises and placing Foxy's hind feet when she is standing.

Day 16

Notes:  More leg movement noted (moves hind legs when dragging herself on the floor, trying to scratch with hind legs). BAR, good appetite.

EXAMINATION:
PULSE: Weak deep toned
TONGUE: pink, slightly purple
good withdrawal responses

TREATMENT:
acupuncture: BL 23, GV3, BL40, BL 62, GB20, GV20, AN SHEN
Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5g BID
Benefit Hips and Knees 1ml BID

Day 26

Notes:  Standing up on her own, able to move hind legs appropriately when lightly supported by the sling. BAR, good appetite, voluntary urination and BM.

EXAMINATION:
Voluntary movement in both hind legs, sever knuckling on both hinds, excellent withdrawals

TREATMENT:
ACUPUNCTURE: BL 23, GB25, GB27, BL 40, BL62,

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5g BID
Benefit Hips and Knees 0.5ml BID
Owner to continue with passive range of motion exercises.

Day 40

Notes:  Markedly ataxic, walks much better on the surface with good traction.

Notes:  Severely ataxic in both hind legs, severe knuckling both hinds, left leg seems weaker.
PULSE: weak and toned
TONGUE: lavender/purple.

fixations at C1 and multiple fixations in the lumbar region.

ACUPUNCTURE: BL23, BL40, BL60, BL62

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang 0.5g BID,
Arnica Montana 30C 3 pellets BID
Limit exercise for 14 days no jumping off the furniture, no stairs etc.

Day 86

Notes:  Marked ataxia, places both hind legs well. moves much better on the floor with good traction.
EXAMINATION:
PULSE weak, deep , decreased tone
TONGUE: pale-lavender

Day 107

Notes:  Jumped off the couch 4 d ago, very sore lower back and one of the hind legs, brief period of urinary incontinence immediately after the injury (resolved within 24 hrs). Owner noted improvement with metacam

Moderate - marked ataxia, no pain on palpation of the hind legs.
TONGUE pink, full
PULSE: slightly wiry
