Case Details
Blossom by LisaHoberg
Otitis Externa

Signalment

  • Age: 14 years
  • Sex: female spayed
  • Breed: Devon Rex
  • Species: cat

Disease Notes

  • Certainty: confirmed
  • Comments: Blossom is my own personal cat - as a Devon Rex she always has waxy, yeast ears but this winter it has gotten much worse. She has chunks of very dark hard wax and her ears also seem "wet" and much itchier than usual. Cleaning the ears removes the wax but they are worse than ever before. Ear cytology reveals yeast, bacteria and WBCs.
  • Final Status: better as of day 29 of treatment

Treatment and Outcome

Treatments
Day 18

Notes:
Now her ears have a very thin discharge and there is no heavy black wax or pus noted. The ears are only slightly itchy. Her overall attitude is much much better.

Day 19

Notes:  One dose of Arsenicum 30c was given on 01/12/2015. No other treatment were utilized during this period.

The discharges are now thin and there are some crusts on the edges of the ears. She is much less itchy overall and her overall energy is better - she is interact more with her family and seems very playful and comfortable.

We will wait and see if any more details emerge before making any more prescriptions for Blossom.

Day 26

Notes:  Right ear is still very itchy, red and has thin discharges that are reddish-tinged and crusts form on the edges of the ears. Not sure how much of this is self-mutilation (she is too small to put an e-collar on (that is my excuse anyway) - Cleaning ears daily with dilute hydrogen peroxide or plain water.

Cleaned ears today with "nona-plato" (nano-silver) made by a client.

Treated with Sulphur 30c. One dose.

Follows Arsenicum as a chronic and was rated very high in my repetorization.

Day 29

Notes:  2 days after giving a single dose of Sulphur 30c the patient's ear is much worse. Very red, very odiferous - smelling like old cheese. Very itchy. Also had MAJOR sneezing fit on the 2nd day after Sulphur 30c. Her energy level is very good and she is engaged in her surroundings very completely. Very good appetite and energy levels.

There is also blood in the ear and chunks of old wax and bloody crusts fill the ear canal. They are cleaned with plain water using cotton swabs and Q-tips.

Today, the third day post-treatment the ear is less pink, is not discharging and there is very little odor. No blood or crusts noted.
