Problem Notes
  • Weight Loss:

Weight loss (6 pounds) and hypoalbuminemia 1.6 (2.7 - 3.9) first noted May 23. Sent for abd ultrasound and taken over by internal medicine specialist. He was found to have splenic and portal vein thromboses, thickened bowels and lymphangectasia.
Dog was started on: pred 22.5 mg BID, spironolactone 50 mg BID, clopidogrel 37.5 mg SID, maropitant 24 mg SID and omeprazole 10 mg before feeding. Royal Canin GI Low Fat food.

Treatments
Day 13

Notes:  JAckson had lost 2.5 pounds, does not like the low fat RX diet. I suggested low fat cottage cheese, dry sauteed mushrooms.
Acupuncture Treatment GV 20, BL 11, 20, 21, 40, 60, ST 36, SP 6, P3
I added bupleurum @ 1/6 teaspoon ( 380 mg) into food twice daily hoping it would help the albumin as well as protecting the liver (Alt and ASt were just slightly elevated).

Diet is largely canned or kibble

Acupuncture points were stimulated

Day 42

Notes:  Jackson is still on allopathic drugs (budesonide 3mg SID, clopiidogrel 18.75 mg SID, omeprazole 10 mg prior to meals, azathioprine 50mg EOD, VSL#3 probiotic and cobalamin ing 1000mcg wekely) as well as receiving weekly acupuncture and bupleurum. He has gained 2 pounds back and has some energy back.

Diet is largely canned or kibble

Acupuncture points were stimulated

Day 56

Notes:  He is down a pound, has mild anemia, albumin of 1.8, his liver enzymes are all moderaately elevated. He is depressed, thin and has runny diarrhea. Owner has been giving slsippery elm/marshmallow combination intermittently. Dog to see int med doc 2 days. I started him on agrimony infulsion 1/3 cup TID through weekend. And he is having trouble with back end too.

Int med doc keeps telling her to stop herbs, but she wants to use some. Now doc wants dog on Immodium.

Dificult case. Am I on right track, maybe try Xiao Chai Hu Tang? or should I just tell her to listen to allopathic guy? No way I can get her on homecooked diet with specialist involved.

Any help out there???
