Question Details
TENS Unit
by marneemadsen - May 27, 2009
Hi,
I am working with a dog with rear limb paresis and ataxia. He has Blood Def, Damp Heat and GB/TH obstruction best I can tell. Client wants prescription for TENS unit to use at home...I have not used one, but understand it could tonify or sedate. It seems like they could possibly make things worse? Anyone have any experience with these? He does not appear to have a lot pain involved.

Thanks,
Marnee

Hi Marnee,

I've never used a TENS unit myself, which is more for pain control. I use electrical stimulation at intensities just below what can be felt. I select frequencies and wave forms while assessing the animal's pulse, to ensure I create the best effect and don't antidote the effect that dry needling would achieve. So for myself, I would have to establish those frequencies in the office, then tell the owner what they were, and would assume they would only be accurate for 7 to 10 days.

I'm not sure if that helps, but that's how I'd handle the situation.

Good luck!

Steve
