Question Details
Cat Lung Mass/Cough
by marneemadsen - June 3, 2009
HI, Me again..

16 yr old Him. mix with hx of slowly growing lung mass and cough since 2006. She had a slight bit of perihilar edema last rads about 6-7 months ago. She started seizuring 5/07 and responded to BXBZTMT and CHJLGMLT and has had no seizures since then. Her tongue is almost always red, she has been obese most of her life, even on canned only (though she is losing weight now), pulses wiry on left and weak on right. Pts often BL22, GB pts, BL17, 15.

We have been maintaining on combos of things..I only get to treat her about every 4-6 months, but she has done well considering, until the past few months. She gets the above 2 herbs plus JWXFZYT, LGZGT, and Vit A weekly.

Cough is moist/wheezy and takes a lot of energy from her. She now is a little dyspnic at rest, swallows a lot (I don't know if that's the plum pit sensation or just all the phlegm). Client gave three 30X Sulphur doses one day and it gave her lots of energy, but she was wiped out for a couple of days afterward, if that helps. She got to see the phlegm once in the past few weeks and it was yellow.

I added in LJZT for lack of a better idea at the moment as she is so phlegmy and looking more Qi Deficient (her appetite is off now), but she needs something for the heat. Stool is formed but stinky. She hasn't improved on SRT in past, wondering which of the lung phlegm heat formulas you would choose, or other ideas?

Thanks,
Marnee

What about:
San Shedan Chuanbei Ye?

Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan?

Wondered about Ren Shen Ge Jei San with her dampness, but too warm?

Sorry it took me a while to reply here. I had to look up a formula for you and I'm on the road away from my usual resources, until today.

A success with Sulphur indicates Damp Heat or Phlegm Heat. The CHJLGMLT you've been using is not just good for seizures, but also intra-thoracic neoplasia. Given the rather impressive lifespan of the cat, it would be wise not to depart too much from that treatment thrust.

The formula would thus seem to have to match two criteria, then - be based on XCHT like CHJLGMLT is; and contain for Phlegm Heat. There is one I've used that has been helpful in a profoundly Qi deficient patient, but where Qi tonics would not help, only elimination of the pathogen. This formula is Chai Hu Xian Xiong Tang. You can find it on page 387 of Dagmar Ehling's Chinese Herbalist's Handbook. You'll have to make it yourself or have someone do that for you, and it won't taste great. One human patient I gave it to described it as like drinking Turkish coffee, which makes Starbucks look like weak tea. So encapsulation may be necessary. But that's probably what I would try for a week or two and see how it goes.

Hope that advice is useful to you,

Steve
