Cat With Chronic Urinary Accidents In House
by cchcs21 - June 16, 2009
Hello!

Leo is a 5 yo DSH MN cat who constantly urinates on anything left on the floor (rugs, bedding, towels ETC). His UA is always normal. No cells or crystals. She feeds him Merricks cat food canned and a few dry kibbles at night. SG is 1078 and PH is 6.5

Here is his TCM history:
prefers to lie in sun
he sleeps a lot and has a low energy. He can be fearful/anxious - hides out a lot.
Tongue pink
Otherwise his exam and history are all normal. No other clinical signs. But the owner is ready to toss him out because nothing seems to help the inappropriate urination issue. Suggestions?
Thanks!

The fear issues are probably what we should focus on, given the lack of inflammation. Fear can come from Kidney deficiency, and Liver Blood deficiency; Liver Qi stagnation can produce anxiety, as can Heart Fire.

There's not much there to guide us in differentiating further, but perhaps in future exams, you can see what acupuncture points his pulse responds to.

Meanwhile, to get results, we probably have to explore some options other than Chinese medicine. If he is an incrediby sweet cat, I'd recommend homeopathic Staphysagria 30C given once or twice daily for a week or two. See if that impacts things.

Otherwise, you can try Saw Palmetto (I'd recommend the glycerine extract from Dr. Boudreaux and Natural Path) for ease of administration. If the urination is due to an irresistible urge associated with urethral irritation or spasm, it should work quickly. Otherwise you can look at Kava, giving 0.2 ml (about 5 or 6 drops) per 5 lbs bw in dd BID, or just given BID if the lower dose doesn't work quite well enough. It's bitter but effective, so try masking it in something or just giving it inside an empty gelatin capsule.

Hope that helps you out!

Steve
