Hi Jodi,
Sounds like a concept. I don't know enough to recommend it. Do leeches only draw actively flowing blood? Or will they draw from pooled blood? That would be the only major question I can think of. Sounds like a research paper for you if you can get this to work!

From what I see, leeches improve vascularization of devitalized or poorly perfused tissue, and secrete anticoagulants into their bites. This causes an increase in bleeding for 24-48 hours after the leech detaches. I don'tknow if this would be appropriate for a hematoma where you wnat the bleeding to stop. It also looks like I may have to order them by the kilogram. EEKS! I can only imagine what my techs would think of cleaning the leech tank!

Jodi,
I was able to get a few from my local hospital for degloving wound on a cat's tail. They definitely find the devitalized areas and go to work. In all the research I did back then, they were for promoting wound healing and not necessarily for draining....

I have a case now where there is post-operative devitalization of the foot after surgery to remove a mass on the lateral metacarpus, despite easing incisions. The foot was cold yesterday, and after emoving some of the sutures, today is warm but still swollen and bruised. There is weak bleeding at the surgery site.
If anyone, e.g. Marnee, has any special considerations/treatment nuances for using leeches, would you please respond? I will be doing the first application tomorrow.
