Sebaceous Warts/papillomas

I have a 11 yr old FS maltese that presented for chewing on a sebaceous papilloma on her tail. She has many of these along her back. She is currently on fish oil and SMS BID for pruritic feet. She has improved with SMS for the pruritus and chews on only one foot now occasionally. Scoots her tail on the floor also due to papilloma on dorsum of tail. She also frequently licks her vulva.

On exam she has a grade 3 systolic murmur and thickened right hock. Bilateral yellow, crusted ocular discharge that occurs in spring, summer. Pulse is thin and superficial and tongue is dark pink with some lavender. Lately she does not want to walk as long on her twice daily walks. Holds up the right rear leg intermittently.

Bloodwork is mild Alk pho (319) and normal UA. LDDS test was normal. Owner wants to address the skin growths and improve her immunity. I placed her on an antioxidant. I think I should keep her on the SMS and add in Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin for a wind heat invasion with blood deficiency (based on thin pulse and lavender tinged tongue).

Hi Erica,

We've noted that Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin will reduce irritation from sebaceous cysts in dogs that respond to SMS. The cysts often won't resolve themselves, but will cease to 'leak' and cease to become a source of irritation. If you feel there is a Blood deficiency there as well, you could either add Dang Gui to the SMS or even add some to the XFHMY. For the latter, add an additional 10 to 15g. For the former, add about 20g. In both cases, these numbers are per 100g of base formula.
