Question Details
Ataxia In A Mastiff
by drsusie - June 25, 2009
Hi Steve,
I have just seen an 18mo old m/n mastiff as a referral who was seen initially for weakness and ataxia. Wobbler's was presumed, but the xrays were normal. The dog does well on pred, other than the side effects of pu/pd showing that he has some dampness and is hot. His tongue is very flacid, pale and moist. His pulse is soft and weak. Active points include BL 21,23,25, GB 20, 34 TH9, SP6 and ST40. I started him on Si Miao San for now to at least address the Damp Heat, but want to know if there is another formula that might be more indicated. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmmm. There are a lot of options. A soft pulse in a giant breed almost invariably means Yi Yi Ren Tang will be effective. Keep that in mind.

With those points, you could even make a case for Kidney Qi deficiency, and a formula like Rehmannia Eight.

Gui Zhi Tang is an option if the animal is chilly. Bu Gan Tang and Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang may be too dampening if the tongue is flabby and wet. Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang is the treatment of choice if the animal ever develops a lot of Heat signs.

Lastly, if the dog seems Qi deficient and responds to Spleen points live LV 13 and BL 20, then Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang is a way to go.

Hope this gives you some ideas. If SMS is not helpful, you should be able to figure out what comes next.

Good luck!

Steve
