Splenomegally In A Yorkie
by drsusie - June 25, 2009
I have just seen a 10yr old female Yorkie who is low in energy, has a red tongue and a wiry pulse. She was diagnosed with splenomegally via ultrasound and the spleen does have cysts and masses. FNAs were non-diagnostic. Any suggestions for herbs for her? I have ordered Xiao Chai Hu Tang. she also has increased BUN and GGT. Is this a good place to start?
Thanks
Susie

Hi Susie,

XCHT is exactly how I'd start, because of it's tremendous reputation in dealing with splenomegaly.

That being said, runner ups would be Liver Qi movers and even Blood movers, given this breed's tendency to Liver Qi stagnation and Liver-Spleen disharmony. Xiao Yao San is often helpful in these animals. If things are really lumpy, I'd consider Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang. It can be used with XCHT if desired.

Hope that helps you out!

Steve
