Question Details
Bone Lesion
by erb152 - July 6, 2009
Hi there, I have an odd case. Nine year old FS Rottie X, very sweet, with a very dedicated owner. Early May noticed favoring LF limb and slower getting up. Painful swelling over distal radius. Has hx of cruciate repair at age five RH and currently suspect partial tear of left. No other clinical signs. On rads had a proliferative bone lesion. Biopsies revealed nothing but new bone formation, no inflammation or neoplastic cells. Pain responds well to Meloxicam. Early June re-xrayed and lesion is more proliferative with lysis of radial cortex. Biopsies still show no inflam or neoplasia. Any ideas?!?

Whenever there is pain due to loss of bone integrity, I think of Symphytum officinale, the western herb. If the dog has no liver issues, this herb should be well tolerated given orally at a dose of 0.2 ml per 5 lbs dd BID. If you are in the US, you probably won't be able to find it, but the homeopathic version will work well.

Hoxsey and Boneset is also a good option, given its content of Boneset, which is a powerful analgesic for deep-seated bone pain and inflammation. If the dog has strong digestion and appetite, the formula should be well-tolerated. Give up to double the dose quoted above for the Symphytum.

Hope that helps you out,

Steve
