Perianal Fistulas

I have a 12 yr old FS Shep mix that has had perianal fistulas for sevearal years. She responds to cyclosporine, but owner does not want to keep her on this due to the expense and she tends to be lethargic and decreased appetite on it.

Steve, I told you before that she had responded very well to Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang. However, she has been completely off cyclosporine now for 3 weeks and was using tacrolimus ointment every 3 days and has flared up again. She has very mild fistulas but I am wondering what else I should do.

She feeds her Beneful and she is a picky eater. I am trying to convince her to feed a better diet. I forgot to get her tongue and pulse. She is a very anxious dog and is also on prozac and famotidine.

One thing you can try is just applying the herbs topically. Find a vitamin A or E based ointment and mix in a teaspoon or three of herbs to create a salve. Have the owner apply it a few times a day. We've found that XFZYT in particular can work topically as well as orally. Exact amounts are probably not crucial, so much as just making sure you get a decent amount applied each day. Topically, the formula has even shrunk mast cell tumors.
