Question Details
Owner Adding Herbs
by dvmwilliams - July 30, 2009
I have a 25 lb. sheltie with Congestive heart failure that is doing really well on western meds plus Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang. The owner recently got a carnitine/taurine supplement that also contains Hawthorn, Dan Shen, and Ginseng. The dog would be getting 105 mg of ginseng daily in addition to what is already in CHJGMLT. Do you think this might upset our currently good balance?

Hi there,

It should be okay, I think - the added Ginseng.

I'm wondering as much about the Dan Shen. Your clients formula is designed to increase blood flow to the heart, whereas the CHJLGMLT is designed to reduce pre-and afterload by dispersing blood from the chest. So there may be some cross purposes between the two formulas. Your client's formula is designed to deal with angina and infarcts. Yours is designed to deal with CHF. So as always, start with a low dose and work your way up to ensure you don't destabilize the dog.

Continued good luck!

Steve
