Question Details
OCD Bullmastiff X
by erb152 - August 9, 2009
Hi there,
I have a four year old neutered male bullmastiffXrottie with some issues. Since he was young he has been a 'nibbler'...at first just occasionally on himself and his owners but since they began travelling with him frequently in a motor home for their jobs in the oil field he nibbles with his teeth on anything (people, clothes, himself, walls, rocks, etc) and does it obsessive-compulsively (gets totally fixated and does it very frequently). The female owner is at home with him and he gets lots of exercise. We are starting some behavioral therapy but they are wondering about herbal options. He is very healthy otherwise except a sensitive GI tract (seems to get diarrhea/looser stool with any diet change). What would you suggest? Thanks in advance,
Beth

Hi Beth,

It's always easier to figure these guys out with a full Chinese medical work up. In general though, you could try Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). It contains Ginseng that counters stress, but also contains herbs that address Damp, Phlegm and GI inflammation, in the event you're seeing pica in response to some form of low grade IBD. Provided the dog is not really hot (red tongue, strong thirst, restlessness, poor sleep, heat intolerance), it should be fine to try.
