Question Details
Ruminants
by marleyhuey - September 5, 2009
In dealing with the four chambered stomach of ruminants - do stomach points act the same? Do you know how to change the dose of herbs as they have to pass through the bacteria laden rumen? My sheep and goat got into a bin of grain and are both bordering on acidosis and having severe bloating and diarrhea - have treated them with homeopathic and conventional but thinking of adding herbs and acupuncture tommorrow. I did treat the goat 8 months ago with Rehmania Eight for ARF along with conventional therapy and it did seem to turn him around.

Hi Monique,

You'd have to check your IVAS notes about the Stomach points on ruminants. In general, I would guess they would function the same.

As for herbs, ruminants make better use of them, I believe, than monogastrics. For sheep and goats, I would guess that for our granules you could start with a human dose - somewhere around 1 to 1/2 tsp BID. What dose seemed to help previously? If it was about the preceding amount, then it's even more likely to be correct, given the positive outcome.

Steve
