Bichon With Vision Loss

I examined a 7 year old Bichon today with history of skin/ear allergies since puppyhood. She has been on and off steroids forever. Recently loss her vision and started to have PU/PD with weight gain. Was worked up for a diagnosis of SARDS(sudden aquired retinal degeneration) although did not really fit all the parameters of a SARDS case. Referring clinic wanted to do an ERG that the client declined. Worked up for Cushings with a positive low dex test. She has a wet, red tongue, overweight, pink skin, hair coat looks a little dry, reverse sneezing. I think she can see objects, shadows, etc. Pulse is weak, fast, and left side deficient compared to right. I dx her as spleen Qi Deficient - she has been on every diet under the sun plus lots of yucky treats (owners love her to death) and possibly some yin deficiency d/t steroid use? I put her on Si Miao San and diet change. Where does the vision loss come in and am I missing something?

Hi Kim,

I've seen acute vision loss before in animals that subsequently responded to Si Miao San. So it's worth trying. To the extent there is an inflammatory component to the SARDS, it may be helpful.

In humans I've used Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin to reverse vision loss, even before conventional medications and laser therapy have had a chance to work. So it's a consideration here for this retinal degenerative process.
