Question Details
Maltese With Severe Demodex And Tracheal Collapse
by ericahawker - September 22, 2009
Hello-

I am treating a 13 yr old FS Maltese that has severe tracheal collapse and severe pododemodecosis. She is on daily pred--2.5 mg SID and hydrocodon syrup for the tracheal collapse since June 2006. That has significantly helped her but she has developed a severe case of demodex on her feet with severe itch, bleeding, alopecia and swelling on all four feet.

Her pulse is thin, wiry and moderate to deep. Tongue is purple/pink. Great appetite, pants, sleeps on bed, formed soft stools.

I have switched her to a home-cooked diet and am decreasing her pred (with hopes of getting her off completely) and started her on oral ivermectin.

My question is to treat both the demodex and tracheal collapse I am trying to decide between Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang and Xiao Chai Hu Tang. Any suggestions?

Also, the owner was wondering of any good topical products to provide comfort for her feet. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Erica

Definitely my first thought is to try Xiao Chai Hu Tang, as a general bronchodilator and immune stimulant. Hopefully it goes well. If you get partial results, we can at least continue to work that angle, and maybe roll in CHJLGMLT or QYT. But if the pulse is deep, then either QYT or XCHT are better choices than CHJLGMLT. You could even try using both formulas together, but I'd start with one and then add the other in, so you know exactly the effect each one has.

Good luck and thanks very much for giving us follow ups on your prior cases!
