Epilepsy Seizures In A Dog
by jschell - August 4, 2018    View Case Report
Unfortunately after having good control wtih LDXGT and CHJLGMLT for 1.5 years, his seizures became more frequent over the past 2 months.
They went from every 2 months to frequent clusters. He is now on 750mg Kepra am 500mg Keppra mid day and 500mgKeppra evening and still receiving his LDXGT and CHJLGMLT. He has seizures between 1am and 7am. Since starting Keppra he still has seizures every 2 weeks.

I performed acupuncur/echiropractic today- his pulse was wiry but bounding and tongue red. Panting a lot . Likes to lie in the sunshine. He eats RAW food diet and PVD Neurocare dry food.

How should I modify his herb formula to help stop his seizures?
Thank you!
Julie

Hi Julie,

There are two possibilities. Normally, to figure out which is likely, I use a response to acupuncture as my guide:

  1. Damp Heat, which you would 'prove' as being present by seeing the pulse moderate in response to standard Damp Heat points, most notably the draining of Stomach 36, but also points like SP 9 and BL 25. Si Miao San is the formula for this, but success even with acupuncture would imply a food sensitivity. Usually food sensitivities in seizuring dogs are to the processed starches found in kibble and canned diets. I see the owner is feeding a blend of both. Generally, any consumption of kibble wipes out the benefits of a raw diet.

  2. Shao Yang disharmony, which lately we've been addressing with a modification of a new formula, called Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang. It seems to be more effective, although we are still accumulating case experience. You'll know to try this approach if it is tonification of GB points that improves the pulse. It's possible that this mechanism of seizures is not as impacted by diet

The timing of the seizures suggests it is actually Spleen deficiency with Damp Heat that is more likely, and that part of the exacerbation might be from diet, and part might be from prolonged use of Spleen cooling formulas. Even though you've just seen the dog, I would get him back in your office for the above acupuncture experiment, so you have some certainty going forward.

With either of the above approaches, you could probably stop the existing formulas.

Thank you Steve. That is fascinating. I will definitely have him back to check his GB and ST36 points.
I'll post my results.
So cool!
Thank you very much!

If he gets better with tonification of ST 36, it supports the Shao Yang hypothesis, so be very mindful of whether you are tonifying or sedating/draining the point to effect any improvements

Hello! I assessed and started him on Si Miao San on Aug 8 due to pulses that matched.

Unfortunately, it is not yet working. and he had another seizure today. The owner also on her own accord started him on CBD

Owner started on CBD oil of her own accord last week. I prescribed Si Miao San Aug 8. He had a seizure today. I was wondering if I should start Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang? We only have Chai Hu Shu Gan San until the order for CHGZGJT arrives . Is it ok to start CHSGS until CHGZGJT arrives?

Thank you!

I'd start the CHGZGJT. Don't use CHSGS in the interim, though. Better to use XCHT or just wait

had a bad seizure last week- June 4 the first one for over 90 days. He has not been on any herb formula since 2018 Owners declined trying the Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang back then. Thus, he has not tried it. A day after his seizure he got swollen eyelids and the emergency vet prescribed topical Tobrex. His eyelids are normal now.

Today pulses wiry, tongue normal pink.

I wonder about trying him on Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang at this time..............................
