Uncontrollable Humping In A Dog-neurological

I have a 18 month old neutered male with an odd problem. Starting about 6 weeks after he was neutered, and approximately 10 months ago, he began having persistent "back spasms" that are really humping behavior. He had one episode of paresis and decreased proprioception and treated conventionally for back pain, rat lung worm disease and IVDD. He does occasionally respond to metacam, but not always. When I saw him he had a pale tongue and weak deep pulses, with no tone. His back was mildly painful, which could in fact be from the constant humping behavior. I treated him with Du Huo Ji Sheng, and then Three Seeds with no help. I did a VIN search, and this is a reported problem, treated as either seizures or once successfully with Robaxin (which does have some CNS sedation). I can refer him to a neurologist but the owner will have to fly there, and of course there will be a large workup cost.

I can of course just try anti seizure herbs, but I am hoping someone has treated or seen a similar case, or has something to offer. This is not just intermittent behavior. When he wakes up he begins humping, and drags himself around, trying to interact and play unsuccessfully. He had a hard time walking normally. These episodes go on for hours until he is exhausted and falls asleep, then they stop.

Hi there,

The spasticity, weak pulse, worsening upon waking, onset after neutering (which can on occasion damage Essence) and worsening in the fall all suggest a Blood deficiency condition. I would wonder about Bu Gan Tang as something to try. Priapism is a Liver complaint, and Bu Gan Tang tonifies the Liver

If there are some benefits, but not enough, then you can try the main anti-seizure medicine for Blood deficient animals, which is Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin. Or you can try them together, to hedge your bets
