Cockatiel: Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Hi

Is there any advice for a 13 year old male cockatiel with a squamous cell carconoma on the side of its face? This bird has undergone surgery to remove the mass (confirmed histologically as SCC) but with neoplastic cells at the margins of the excised tissue. The mass has started to return two months post surgery. Given its proximity to the eye the owner does not want to do radiation or fluorouracil cream.

How inflamed was the lesion? Was it slow growing or rapidly growing?

Hi Steve

There was a thin layer of dried serous discharge. The mass itself if light pink. We removed the original tumour two months ago but the owner noticed it growing about a week prior to the most recent appointment and when I saw it, the tumour was about 2mm across. So I feel like it is quickly growing now.

It sounds like you could try to address it topically. You can use the same formula as for the thymoma (i.e. Modified Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang). Take about 10g and mix it into about 3 oz. Of the ointment of your choice (e.g. something with vitamin A or Calendula). Apply liberally TID.

If you see improvements, you can also dose orally with the same formula

If it looks more red, we need to use something like Hoxsey-like Tincture instead. Probably topically to start, then orally mixed in something delectable like a fruit paste
