Xiao Chai Hu Tang

Hello, this past Spring I was still mostly ordering through Eastern Currents as per my employers request. Several back orders on product began in February and it became really hard to obtain many herbs, including Xiao Chai Hu Tang. I ended up ordering the KPC tablets for awhile as that was all I could get. I recently read in my notes, however, that many human products put too much Bupleurum in. There is 347mg Bupleurum per 750mg tablet.

Alongside this I’ve had a few dogs not do as well. One is a kidney case - older Yorkie with CRF - he did really well for two weeks and then went off food, really lethargic. I redid bloods and his SDMA was at 31! Unfortunately his previous Vet did not run an SDMA. BUN was slightly higher than previous bloods though.

Another was an 8yo Pug with URT issues and collapsing trachea for which I added the XCHT. A few weeks later he saw his rDVM and his liver enzymes were elevated. The rDVM blamed the herbs and they were stopped. Neither the Vet nor the owner were upset with me but at the time I thought it unlikely this change was due to the XCHT. Now I’m starting to doubt myself.

Can you enlighten?!? And why is NP not having this back order issue (I’m ever so glad because I finally get to order what I want)!!!!???

Hi Corinne,

We advocate only using half that amount of Bupleurum, since higher doses can make any lurking renal blood flow insufficiency become clinical. The same is probably true for lurking hepatic blood flow insufficiency, although you don't actually know when those liver enzyme elevations occurred, and there is a seasonal flux in liver enzymes on top of that. Perhaps they would have been even higher without the Bupleurum! You don't really know without doing pre-treatment blood work, so we strive for that ourselves.

As to back order issues, it may have to do with new regulations in China. They are making it much harder to export herbs lately (maybe due to all this trade-war nonsense?). KPC may have been caught in that and experienced delays. We are taking steps to try to avoid being caught up in that ourselves

Hello Steve,

Thank you so much for this. I’ve been wondering if I was messing up using this version of XCHT. It has been an issue with other animals too but I assumed I misdiagnosed. Nothing dire but definitely not seeing many improvements. I feel so badly I didn’t realize this until now ????

That's why it's good to have access to veterinary products, if you can maintain them in stock. Then you don't have to worry about that kind of thing. Practitioners have enough to think of. Hopefully the veterinary suppliers will continue to be able to provide herbs unmolested, to limit the incidence of this kind of problem
