Struvite Bladder Stones In A Dog

My 6 year old Shiba Inu developed Struvite stones from a Staph pseudointermedius bacteria that is resistant to each antibiotic on culture other than nitrofuroantoin, amikacin and genatmicin. I am deathly afraid of those antibiotics as they can cause neurological disease and GI side effeccts. The only option would be to try high dose 22mg/kg amixicillin TID for 14 days.

I have had her on the herb formula called Dang Gui Shao Yao San for 2 weeks, but her bacterial urinary infection is still present. uriine pH is 7; USG is 1.036 Blood results normal

What herb formula should I try now? She has overall normal pulses, maybe the odd tine mildly weak, and her tongue color is normal. No clinical signs of urinary tract infection. Good appetite. Good energy.

Hi Julie,

Our standard sure-fire urinary acidifier is Hydrangea and Eupatorium, made by Natural Path

For the UTI itself, you can look at Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang if the pulse is on the weak side.

Hopefully that helps you out. Otherwise, is there a past medical history or perhaps some active acupuncture points that improve the pulse? Maybe they will help me help you if the above ideas don't work

Yes- her pulses seem a bit weak. Improved with KID 3 treatment.

Recheck culture of her urine showed no growth!!!!! Thank God! I'm happy I never had to start on Nitrofurantoin antibiotics.

I have had her on Clavaseptin TID at 22mg/kg

I still see small bladder stones on ultrasound. I think they look a bit smaller compared to 2 weeks ago. I'm going to maintain her Clavaseptin, Cranberry herbs and SFZYT for 2 more weeks and reculture. Hopefully soon, she will just stay on SFZYT and cranberry. I won't stop treatments until the bladder stones are totally dissolved.

Soooo check this out! Schatzi's stones are competely dissolved Recheck radiographs were performed December 4-- no more stones seen on radiographs or ultrasound.
the Clavaseptin TID, and SFZYT treatments I feel were working together to fix this issue. I have been doin gcultures every 2 weeks- they have been normal for the past 2 cultures- no more Staph pseudointermedius! . I'll maintain Clavaseptin TID for another 2 weeks.

Shall I keep this dog on SFZYT forever to prevent future stones/ bladder infections?

Hi Julie,

That might be safest. If the pulse becomes supple and rounded, then the formula may no longer be needed

A real food diet will help prevent recurrences, but I assume you're already doing that?
