Fibrosacrcoma In A Dog
by Dreudog - October 28, 2019    View Case Report
Hello Steve and group,

This dog is a 7 yr old Golden w/ a FSA of the upper lip; biopsied in June. Her owners declined chemo/radiation and sought holistic care 9/24/19. Sadie had a history of summer hots spots, otitis, and her owners felt they only came on when she swam. There is no sign of discomfort since the onset of this mass; she plays, runs, eats normally.

On exam:

- Temperament extra sweet
- pudgy
- L upper lip has a 6X 4 cm firm, painless swelling. Incisors on that side are slightly spread apart, does not appear on palate.
- mild bilateral conjunctiva; erythema (still ragweed season here)
- pulse; middle- deeper, toned
- Tongue; sl. pale, sl. lavendar

She was on Fresh Pet (cooked raw commercial) and kibble . We changed to all raw, rotating proteins, added cruciferous veggies. I also had them start CAS Options. VIt A & D, inositol, fish oils lower dose. Herb Rx was Si Miao san (Kan - 3 tabs TID)and dang gui.

Recheck 4 weeks; mass has grown slightly (perhaps ~ the same rate as it had been). Pulse sl. slippery now, but the rest of her PE was unchanged.

I'm wishing I'd started a 2nd, more anti- neoplastic herb first visit; so now am wondering about adding Hoxsey? I don't appreciate lots of heat w/ her; more somewhat damp and blood deficient IMO. Or XCHT? I thought its was odd that her pulse seemed more slippery this visit, as it has been fairly dry and colder weather lately, and she'd been on the SMS/DG for 3.5 weeks or so. Could the dang gui be to dampening? Thought about DGSYS also.

Thoughts??

Thnx,

Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Lots of good ideas there, in terms of directions to go in. We use a response to acupuncture to help us decide which is most likely to help.

You're right that a slippery pulse suggests Dampness, but then I would have expected a bit of a benefit from using SMS, even with Dang Gui added. Another thing that can produce a stronger 'slippery' pulse is Shao Yang disharmony, with Yang failing to internalize. Its location near the midline on the GV vessel supports the notion that this tumor is arising because of a disruption in the descent of Yang, since that is the GV's main purpose - modulating body Yang reserves.

Deploying CHJLGMLT or XCHT would be the way to go if that is going on. If you tonified GB 34 and the pulse improved, that would give you all the confirmation you need. You could then layer in a Blood mover like San Qi to get a bit of an anti-cancer hit without being too dispersing (which would undermine the efficacy of the formula). Hoxsey will pair with either SMS or the Shao Yang formulas, so can be introduced at any time.

The last differential for a slippery pulse is Blood deficiency. The pulse in this instance is invariably superficial and thin in addition to being toneless. If you felt the pulse had more vigor, then this is likely not what is going on.

Hopefully these ideas help you out!

This mass continues to enlarge, slowly and steadily. Dog is on XCHT 3 tabs TID and SMS 2 TID, + dang gui powder 1/8 tsp. TID. I cannot correct her pulse, even w/ the TID XCHT. Perhaps add the san qi, ^ her dang gui, maybe lower or stop the SMS (too drying?).

Thnx,

Cathy
