Transitional Cell Carcinoma In A Dog
by Dreudog - November 1, 2019    View Case Report
Hi Steve and group,

I see an 11 yr old SF Scottie for TCC- first symptomatic w/ dysuria, pollakiuria in early June (2019), mass seen in trigone area on 7-1 ultrasound. BRAF + 7/27.

First exam 7/24-

- fairly social for a Scottie!
- sl. overweight
- mild dorsal seborrhea, flaking
-T: sl. pale, dry
- P: middle-deep, toned, sl. ^ rate

Repeat exams have been ~ same, altho' on her 9/18 exam her pulse was a bit more feeble.

She was given Piroxicam by her rDVM, I added cooked diet, Shao fu zu yu. tang and LJZT + VIT A & D, mushrooms, Cranberry Wellness. Recheck ultrasound September showed mass ~ same size, but some hydroureter and hydronephrosis. Her stranguria was sl. worse, so I added Si Miao san 9/18 - seemed to help some.

Purdue and U of M have recc. a ureter stent, but the owner has declined since it will not help her bladder symptoms and may need to placed via abdominal surgery.

So I'm looking for any additional help herb- wise for this little dog.

Thanks!!

Hi Cathy,

A June onset fits a response to Si Miao San - i.e. Dampness as a cause. You could add Zhu Ling (Polyporus) to SMS if you like. The latter has shown specific activity against bladder cancer cells

In humans, the mainstay of treatment is Xiao Chai Hu Tang and it seems to work well. The idea is that the Dampness and Stasis in the Bladder is trapped there by a Dai Mai that is too tight. Using Minor Bupleurum (perhaps with added Turmeric) may thus help as well and can be used in tandem with your existing protocol.

Lastly, for one of my human patients, Dang Gui Shao Yao San fit his symptoms (although he had the benefit of surgical removal of the tumors first). The initial presenting symptoms sounded a lot like what DGSYS is used for, so you could try it here, too. It's not as vigorously anti-cancer but the Dang Gui could inhibit VEGF. You could also just add a touch of Dang Gui to your SMS.

So there you go: DG, Zhu Ling, and XCHT. All of them can be implemented at once if you want to hedge your bets

Steve
