Dose Question
by TraceyH - September 28, 2009
Hi Steve,

I just noticed that the dosing recommendations in your NPHC guide/booklet are different than those on the website. The guide says to start granules at 1 g twice daily per 20 lbs whereas the webite says to give 1 g daily per 10 - 20 lbs. Which is it?

Thanks,
Tracey

Hi Tracey,

1g per 20 lbs per day is about as low as we would start an animal on. Often, we'll double that dose, to get our effect, then wean down to the lower dose to maintain the animal. Having said that, because our granules are twice as potent as any others on the market, the reality is that 1g per 20 lbs per day will often suffice.

Hope that makes things a bit more clear. Basically, because herbs have a very broad therapeutic index, there is a broad dose range that can be used. If it seems vague, just think of how pred doses are written, or amoxicillin. The difference between the high and low end of the dose for each of these two drugs, like herbs, differs by at least a factor of two.

Hope that helps,

Steve
