I have a M/N rat terrier, 11 yr old in CHF due to mitral valve disease. He's currently on vetmedin, spironolactone, benazepril & furosemide but he's requiring higher doses of furosemide to control the pulmonary edema. at his last visit the tip of his tongue was bight red & the rest of his tongue was pale, pulses wiry. He's a bit of a worrier to boot. We haven't used TCVM for him but the family now wants to start him on Jin kui shen qi wan. I can't seem to find much info about whether this would be a good match for him-suggestions?

Hi there,
I haven't found Rehmannia Eight (which is Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan) to be that helpful in CHF. Our standby approach is Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, often combined with Xiao Chai Hu Tang. I would think given the pulse and tongue you describe that combination should be helpful here. Rehmannia Eight can be used in tandem with these, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of benefits, unless there is overt renal azotemia

Thanks! I thought you may appreciate this-my client had to check with her Mom. This is the email I received from my client this morning:
"Thank you so much for your update. I am so grateful and thankful for your care and your concern. I spoke to my mom as she studies and uses Chinese herbs.
She said, “I am glad that your Vet can connect to the specialists of Chinese herbs. Yes, they are right that the Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is not the right formula for heart disease. I recommended it because there is no suitable one for Rory to be found in the ordinary market. The Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang is designed for special treatment for congestion of blood in the chest (heart). From the Chinese medicine point of view, the congestion can be caused by stagnant blood and/ or mucus. This formula is for getting rid of stagnant blood (dead blood) in the upper body (chest/heart). I think it is right on for Rory's case and he needs it. We have to get rid of the dead blood in order to revive the blood to keep it moving so that the blood can flow freely to and from the heart. This formula is rather draining for the body if the body is weak. When he is on the formula, please visit your Vet more frequently to monitor the effect of the formula on Rory. Once the blockage is toned down we can use a lesser draining formula with the herbs for reviving the blood and circulation and some herbs for strengthening the Qi to keep the blood flow freely. The reviving formula can be the maintenance formula for longer-term.
As for the Xiao Chai Hu Tang, I like it too. Usually, blockage of blood or blockage by mucus comes from the toxin or the imbalance of yin and yang. This formula will look after that. Give it to Rory too if he can take it. Your Vet is right to start slowly with the herbs.
Besides the Chinese herbs, the taurine formula which Rory is having is very good for the heart. I would like to see him continue taking it.

Best of luck! We have some formerly desperate CHF cases now in their fourth year and going strong, following the introduction of herbs. Fingers crossed this is one of those cases, too!
