Hyperaesthesia In A Cat
by johnnalsmith - April 13, 2020    View Case Report
Hanni is a 15 yo, MN, DSH cat that presented to me after years of being on gabapentin for hyperaesthesia. The gabapentin just knocks him out according to the owner so she wanted to try and fix the problem instead. He is a damp heat cat for sure. Toned pulse, reddish tongue. I started him on SRT (Kan Three Seeds) and performed acupuncture (wind expelling and damp draining points). He was extremely relaxed after his treatment, but the next day he is much worse. Any suggestions for his next treatment?

Points: GV 20, GV 14, BL 20, BL 40 (sedate), SP 6

Thank you

Hi Johnna

Any chance of a chiropractic issue here? To guard against aggravation I always check the pulse afterward to make sure it feels better to me (more moderate, less toned).

There is always a chance that you have a standard Kidney deficiency creating the predisposition to Wind invasion. In that case, you'd need some tonifying in addition to the expulsion of the pathogen. Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (aka Kan Essential's Supple Spine) may help you there. I would expect a response to KI 3 or BL 23 if it were to help. Kidney deficiency probably goes with the profound sedation in response to Gabapentin, too

Lastly, there is always the chance of active inflammation of the back going on, in which case concomitant use for a few days with your herbs of an NSAID may help avoid the acupuncture being irritating. Even plain old ASA may help. A 6kg cat could probably handle 80 mg ASA up to TID if necessary, for at least a little bit

Those are just some thoughts. Hopefully there is a useful idea in there somewhere

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately, there aren't many chiropractic options available locally, but I'll see if the owner is willing to travel. There is someone I trust, just not close.

I will check the pulse before, during and after as well as the response to KD 3 and BL 23 to see if DHJST would be advisable. I will also add in an NSAID too!

I'll keep you posted!
