Nasal Carcinoma And Pulmonary Fibrosis In A Dog

Dear Steve and colleagues,

I have a 13 years old Westie with nasal carcinoma with possible pulmonary fibrosis.
The dog has severe Phlegm accumulation due to Lung Qi Deficiency.
I could not feel her pulse, and her tongue was pale lavender colour.

Her owner did not want to do chemo and decided to try herbal medicine.
At the first appointment, she only had clear nasal discharge and I started her on Xin Yin San 4 weeks ago. Today, the dog came back with epistaxis. Her lungs were crackly too.
I would like to add Nei Xiao Wan and Yunnan Bai Yao to reduce the size of mass and control epistaxis.

Is it too cooling if Xin Yin San and Nei Xiao Wan used together? As mentioned in another discussion, would you recommend Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang instead?

Hi there,

Nei Xiao (Luo Li) Wan is a patent remedy and doesn't really have a treatment focus, so I haven't used it much. I don't think it is excessively cooling, though

For me, I often find I have to use Modified Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang in these cases, along with the Xin Yi San. This formula is good for fibrosis, too. I often add Dan Shen for that - about 15g per 100g of XFZYT. XFZYT usually addresses the epistaxis.

If mucous discharge from the nares is physically abundant, consider swapping out the Xin Yi San for Cang Er Zi San.

If there are other clear indicators of Lung and Wei Qi deficiency, you can consider Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang as your Blood moving herb to address epistaxis. Phlegm itself, though, does not necessarily indicate Lung Qi deficiency.

Occasionally I add in Hoxsey, usually in cases refractory to the above, for added cooling and moving effects.

Yunnan Bai Yao is absolutely not a problem to add in at the present time.
