Flakey Dander In A Dog
by CorinneC - October 31, 2020    View Case Report
Marcel is a 1yo Pittie X with chronic pruritus and large white flakey dander. He came as a very immunosuppressed NEUTERED boy at 2mth of age from a rescue in Manitoba. He'd had sarcoptic mange and been treated with Dolpac and Revolution several times (as well as heavily vaccinated). He is fed Regional Red Orijen kibble. Stools tend toward the softer side, but mostly formed. His coat has remained dull, he gets ear infections that are very painful. When I started seeing him for the ear issue he became quite aggressive and the owners have since been working with a behaviourist. His tongue was pink-lavendar, thin, and wet. I was unable to check his pulses then because of his new attitude to touch. He also has bilateral hip dysplasia.

I tried Xiao Yao San for a while for its "Free and Easy Wanderer" effects but no change after 4 months. I added Xiao CHai Hu Tang for the hip dysplasia two months ago which has really helped with his hips but the skin is now even more dry and flakey. His tongue is now a slightly darker pink, reddish tip, wet, flabby, maybe slightly swollen? His pulses are thin, narrow, choppy, and rapid. I tried Si Miao San to see if this was now Damp Heat? Owner says after 2 weeks no real change.

I'm now wondering about Long Dan Xie Gan Tang? I'd love your thoughts on this crazy large white dander??

Hi Corinne,

It would be unusual for the hips and the skin to be unrelated, so continued use of XCHT is likely called for. I find most dogs for whom XCHT is beneficial are Blood deficient, however, necessitating the use of Si Wu Tang at the same time. XCHT by itself is drying, so a worsening of flaking dander with its use makes it even more likely that Blood deficiency is present as well.

I would try a 2:1 ratio of XCHT and Si Wu Tang before giving up on your current approach. Hopefully that helps!

Just wanted to update and say that this combination seems to be working well for Marcel, including daily Metacam. The Si Wu Tang definitely helps to reduce dander and quell the drying effects of Metacam.

Nice! You can try adding some Qin Jiao to your XCHT to get a better effect on the hips, too, but I'm glad things are working out!

So turns out Marcel has Ichtyosis, but is still doing well on the above combo alongside Dermoscent 3-in-1!

We added Dermoscent Essential 6 spot-on and the skin is mostly controlled. He is quite comfortable with regard to his hips. Still need to be wary with him and he comes in with a muzzle, unfortunately, because he still tends to startle and face punch.

Thanks for the update, Corinne! I'm glad he's doing well. I use XCHT on many skin cases. Here's hoping you keep that pretty face of yours safe from Marcel!
