Renal Lymphoma

Hi Steve,
Have been seeing an 11 year old S/F DSH for history of chronic vomiting and licking her forelimbs for over a year. Has responded better on canned grain-free food, but continued to lose weight- Blood profile in July showed only moderately elevated eosinophils- dewormed as a precaution. Saw her today- pale pink mm's, weak, vomiting bile occ, poor appetite,PU/PD, weak pulses and huge kidneys. I am concerned about renal lymphoma- have renal profile out to confirm anemia, etc.
What would you do with this kitty in your practice? Not sure that the owner will go for renal biopsy. Do cats tolerate Hoxsey well or would you consider Minor Bupleurum?

Hi Michelle,

Off the cuff, XCHT would have been my first pick, given its renal and antineoplastic benefits. The state of collapse would give me pause, though. Sometimes, in advanced cancer cases in cats, the first thing you have to do is tonify the Kidney Qi. That might be especially appropriate here in a renal tumor case. So I'd start with Ba Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Eight Combination) just to see what happens. Or use the two formulas together. The exception is if you needled Gall Bladder points and the pulse got a lot stronger. Then XCHT is more strongly indicated. Hoxsey is probably too intense for the cat right now.

Hi steve,

Looked this case up and I have one fairly similar. Importantly anemia was severe on testing (HCT 18)and it really looks dreadfully deficient despite massive kidneys - everything else is getting smaller!

Has thin red tongue - so I was definately feeling needs some KID tonification but felt some heat clearing would also be nice - thus I was thinking ZBDHW or, if you thought that too strongly heat clearing, perhaps LWDHW rather than BWDHW. What do you think?
Notably didn't get notable response from GB point needling - KID3 and BL23 more active.
