ALT Increasing On Wei Ling Tang

Good afternoon,
I started a 10 year old, f/s overweight cat on Wei Ling Tang in February after routine BW showed an ALT of 254. On recheck this week her ALT has increased to 435, SAP is 262 and her TBili is 0.9. Owner has no complaints.
I am not confident about a pulse diagnosis on this cat (she is fat so hard to find) and tongue is pink. Coincidence? Or have I peeled an onion.

Hi Karin,

WLT acts a bit like a Liver Blood tonic, increasing the blood supply to the liver, so if liver enzymes go up following its use, it implies the Liver is in excess. I would look at trying something with the opposite effect instead, like Si Miao San, particularly if the cat is overweight. There are other formulas to deal with excess, too - SMS is not the only one to try - but if the cat eats canned food or kibble, then SMS is probably the place to start.

SMS tastes more bitter, but if the cat can be pilled easily, then you can try the Kan Essentials version of SMS. Or, you can put the granular extract of SMS into capsules and give it that way.

We are trying the Si Miao San liquid with honey, liverwurst and canned chicken cat food. I'll keep you posted on ALT values.
