Question Details
Alopecia In A Dog
by johnnalsmith - October 29, 2021    View Case Report
Meeko is a 6 year old, male neutered, pomeranian that presented for generalized alopecia that started about 3 years ago. It started as small bumps then the groomer stripped the undercoat and it never grew back. He has some hair on his head and legs, but has almost none on his back and sides. The hair he does have is very coarse, dull and brittle. He's been on a raw diet for 1.5 years. Has a senstive stomach and will have vomiting and diarrhea if he eats something he isn't used to. He is cold now, but his owner said he had no temperature preference prior to hair loss. No other health issues. Has had some teeth pulled. P= thin, wiry, T=red. He barks when he's in the clinic but is sweet and loves to be held.
He has been on Bu Gan Tang for 6 weeks (1/2-500mg tablet BID; he's 6 pounds) without much change. Any other ideas?
Thank yoU!

Hi there,

The lack of response to raw tells us this is not likely to be a Damp case. The redness of the tongue and coarseness of the coat tell us there is a lot of Heat despite the chilliness, suggesting the latter is probably due to poor skin circulation. If pure Blood tonics haven't helped, and if the onset was associated with papules and skin lesions, then it suggests there may be an unresolved folliculitis promoting the problem, accompanied by Blood stasis.

I've started some of these animals on Qing Ying Tang, switching to more pure Blood tonics or Si Wu Xiao Feng Yin as cases plateau after their initial response.

Hopefully Qing Ying Tang gets things going for you
