Question Details
Cervical Formula Comparison With Natural Path?
by CorinneC - October 11, 2022
Hi Steve,

I have a Wobblers case - 6yo FS Dobie, worse in the front > hindend. She can run like the wind still but then gets very lame after too long, bunny hops in the hind legs, hypermetric gait, hindlegs appear disconnected. Pulses are toned, tongue is lavender-pink, on the dry side, decent size. She is a rescue and has dog aggression, gets very agitated. When she comes to me for acupuncture she is so sweet but can't sit still, wandering around the room as I stick needles in!

I put her on Xiao Chai Hu Tang and Bu Gan Tang initially but no change. Then I switched to XCHT with Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang. Stayed about the same. The owner belongs to a Facebook page and asked me to order the Cervical Formula from the Qi institute. It seems to help her in the sense that she has better stamina and her hindend seems stronger. The owner wants to find another option with Natural Path because, she, like me, prefers to buy from a local company. The Cervical formula contains Bai Shao Yao, Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui Wei, Gan Cao, Ge Gen, Gui Zhi, Ji Sue Tent, Mu Gua, Qiang Huo. Some similarities to my formula choices, but I don't know what "Ji Sue Tent" is? Could I take my base formulas and just add Ge Gen, Gui Zhi, the illusive Ji Sue Tent, Mu Gua, and Qiang Huo? If so, does Natural Path carry these herbs?

Thank you in advance!!!!

Hi Corinne!

I commonly add Wind expelling herbs to Xiao Chai Hu Tang to give it a Wind pathogen releasing effect even as it reduced cord and nerve inflammation. The usual additions are Gui Zhi and Bai Shao (and Qiang Huo specifically for the neck). Ge Gen is fine, too, along with Mu Gua. All of those dispel Wind pathogens and/or relax the neck musculature, and are available through Natural Path, if you want a formula customized for you, like Minor Bupleurum in particular.

As for Ji Sue Tent, that appears to be a typo on the label (since I checked online as well). The actual plant is probably Ji Xue Teng, which is not really necessary, and is sometimes used to unblock channels. I think you'll get a good enough effect from the above, though. As for the other Blood herbs, you have those covered if you're using Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang. If you're not, then the above Bai Shao should be enough

Just so you know, we did end up using the modified XCHT and I added back XFZYT (because her anxiety and dog aggressive had been increasing) and she is doing very well! Much more energy now, back to her crazy Dobie zoomies around the park (lasts about 20 minutes, then fatigues but this is daily)! The owner is so happy to see her improve from such a rapidly declining state. I went to update this but the link isn't coming up?

That's awesome that the dog is doing well, Corinne! You're awesome!

I will try to see if I can figure out what the problem is so you can update your case!
