Integrative Care For Heartworm Disease In A Dog
by bodawee - November 3, 2022
Hello Holistic Veterinary Community -
I have a new client coming in this afternoon for consultation for heartworm disease treatment. I feel most comfortable recommending the AHS recommendations to treat this patient and to provide complimentary care suggestions in the form of herbs, acupuncture, food, etc.
Patient is a 10 year old English Springer Spaniel who apparently has HWD. Any specific recommendations? Thank you, Ashley

Hi Ashley!

Cynthia Lankenau just published a case report in the IVC Journal showing it can be done. I've accomplished the same myself. The general strategy to follow is to treat what you're seeing from a Chinese medical perspective (e.g., such as Blood stasis in the upper burner) and then add anti-parasitics that 'pair well' with the herbs used in the main formula. An example is Wormwood (Artemisia, Qing Hao).

Conventional drugs are always there for you if you do not see an improvement. My experience is that holistic medical treatments need to be sustained over a long period of time, say many months, but that is not an issue given their non-toxic nature and the fact that they are making the patient stronger (by dealing with their symptoms and signs) in the process.

Hopefully this basic advice helps you out!

Steve
