Question Details
Cough Due To Collapsing Trachea
by tali57 - October 16, 2009
Hi. I was hoping for some advice on a product that a client of mine asked me about. I've been acupuncturing her dog for a persistant collapsing tracheal cough exacerbated by (I believe) seasonal allergies.

She found a cough syrup online that consists of the following herbs:
Sang Ye, Chuan Bei Mu, Jie Geng, Xing Ren, Pi Pa Ye, Ting Li Zi and Bo He. The couple of ingredient I've been successful in looking up seemed pretty good. Any thoughts?

Also, can anyone recommend a reference guide that may be helpful in looking up herbs and their most common uses?

Thanks in advance.
Tali

Hi Tali,

The herbs are probably safe to try. The formula is designed to treat the common cold, though, so has a lot of effects that may not help a collapsing trachea case. But it should be safe to try. For references, you can google 'Chen and Chen', or 'Bensky and Gamble'. These are both comprehensive materia medicae. For a shorter cheaper text, consult the Chinese Herbal Materia Medica authored by Him-Che Leung. All of these will help you figure out what the herbs in most formulas are doing there.

For collapsing trachea, over the years, I've had best results with Xiao Chai Hu Tang. It is a calming formula that promotes bronchodilation. So it's a better choice, I think, for this condition than a formula for the common cold.

Hope that's useful,

Steve
