Vortex Vs DM Formula

Hi Steve,

I have an old GSD patient with hip OA, stifle OA and back pain. There's severe proprioceptive deficits and weakness in the hindquarters too, so difficult to differentiate if there could be degenerative myelopathy component along with the OA. Owners have declined doing the DM genetic test.

Voltrex seemed like a good fit with signs and pulse, but I'm wondering if I should use DM Formula instead for the possible degenerative myelopathy. Would the DM formula still provide as much anti-inflammatory pain relief as the Voltrex?

Hi Sophie,

Voltrex provides more anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxing and pain relieving effects than DM Formula since it contains Qin Jiao (large leaf Gentian), turmeric, cinnamon and peony. That said, the first hip dysplasia dog I ever helped with Minor Bupleurum didn't have those additives in it, making it similar to DM Formula. So, if you wanted to cover some bases, you could try it first. The back issues suggest, though, that you'll need a Tai Yang releasing herb to address that, which is what Cinnamon and Peony do in Voltrex.

To help ensure owners use the optimum formula as soon as possible, I suggest they get the home DNA testing kits in the US. I'm not sure if kits exist to test for DM at home in Australia, but if so, it would be worth a try. Otherwise, it's safest to try the DM Formula first, and then if there is zero response, explore Voltrex and Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang

Yes, although treatment of DM might be more effective with the DM Formula alone, so maybe try it solo first
