Hi Llewanda,
I don't know of any contraindication for the use of XCHT in pups. I would definitely get going with it for this case, along with a Blood tonic. Yi Guan Jian or Si Wu Tang are both good choices.
I'm excited to see how you do. There could be a dramatic recovery in the offing for you!

Hi Steve,
Nessa had bloodwork a few days ago RBC 3.99 HCT 26.0 HGB 8.3 Retic 81.1 %Retic 2.3 Platelets that had got up to over 1200 at one point were at 495 MPV 16.7 Owner missed repeating chemistries previously but this time showed BUN11.2 Glob 53, ALT up however to 667. Rest of liver parameters all normal. Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly significantly reduced. Nessa has raised a litter of thriving puppies. Still nurses them a bit in the morning but they have been essentially weaned onto a raw diet. Her energy and activity were back to pretty much normal, supervising her barnyard chickens and monitoring predator activity and we had all been pleased with her somewhat slow but steady clinical progress. Unfortunately about the time she had the bloodwork done she started with mild nasal bleeding again. Has passed a couple of 3/4 inch dark blood clots after sneezing and followed with some mild episodes of dripping bright red blood. Has had some dripping, first L nostril then R nostril, unrelated to sneezing. No nasal discharge ever noted. She is a bit heat avoiding, and her energy dropped a bit for a couple of days after the bleeding restarted. We have had hot humid weather for the first time this spring. An excellent veterinary homeopath has recommended Cal Carb as she has restarted dirt eating which she did for a bit a few weeks ago. She had gotten back to eating her usual diet preferences but is now wanting liver again. I've had her on Xiao Chai Hu Tang and Si Wu Tang. MM slightly pale pink but Tongue is a good pink, moist, very slight lavender tinge. Pulse moderate strength, moderate depth to sl deep, very slightly wiry, no longer thin. Her dorsal nasal planum has gotten dry on a couple of occasions then returned to normal. She weighs 61 lbs. Wondered if I should be looking to change herbs or see if we can increase dose of current herb. How high would you recommend going if we continue XCHT and SWT. I may need to try to do TID as she isn't a big fan of the herbs especially the SWT. Include Yunnan Bai Yao during episode ? It wasn't available when this first started. She has come so far overall and bleeding mild but concern is another big bleed. Finances are a concern so doing more frequent bloodwork isn't really doable. I'm glad you've made significant strides with this dog, as originally hoped. For the current epistaxis, Yunnan Bai Yao is fine to try and use anytime there is a bleed.
The response ot the herbs confirms the dog has a Shao Yang disharmony with Blood deficiency. Another formula to manage that is Halscion (Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang plus Yi Guan Jian). The nose belongs to the Stomach channel for the most part, so Stomach Heat can be reflected as epistaxis. If the dog is not particularly Damp, then Stomach Heat can be assumed to arise instead from Dryness (the quintessential Yang Ming pathogen). YGJ treats Yang Ming dryness and associated Heat, and supports the continued formation of Blood.
Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang is a good potential choice as well. It helps internalize Yang. Ascendant Yang can likewise cause nose bleeds (since the Governing Vessel is likewise intimately associated with the nose). Since Yang is fully emerged on the surface and the dog is still a little Blood deficient, we may be seeing a few weeks early what would normally happen in July (a surfeit of Yang and a lack of Yin on the upper and outer body surface). In that case, CHJLGMLT + YGJ should help
Lastly, for some dogs with obstinate nasal lesions that are bleeding, I've used Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, but this doesn't seem like that situation. Still, it's a consideration.
Hopefully these ideas help you out. I still anticipate you can completely cure this dog.
