Laryngeal Paralysis In A Dog

Hobbs is a 14 year old cattle dog/malamute mix that originally presented for poor mobility. He was previously diagnosed with stifle OA bilaterally, but also has poor hip mobility. He is mild to moderately overweight, has a large lipoma, and previously diagnosed laryngeal paralysis. He is cool seeking, a picky eater, no vomiting or diarrhea, no cough but loud harsh breathing, and is a very anxious guy. Bloodwork unremarkable.

Tongue is pink to pale pink with deep cracks. Cracks have improved with acupuncture. Pulse is soft.

Have been working on his mobility with rehab and he is currently on Benefit Hips and Knees. Owner is now most concerned about the laryngeal paralysis.

Considering adding in a kidney tonic with the Benefit Hips and Knees, but am looking for herbal recommendations to address the laryngeal paralysis.

Hi Sidney,

I agree that a Kidney Yin and Qi tonic is a good next step. The improvement in the tongue signals Yin deficiency while the anxiety, age, mobility issues and poor appetite all could conceivably respond to Kidney support. Even the harsh breathing might as well, since labored breathing is a cardinal sign of Qi deficiency.

Accordingly, I would look at something like You Gui Wan (Restore the Right; Eucommia and Rehmannia Combination). You could also even consider Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, but I would have expected the pulse in that situation to be more floating, and not just weak.

Maybe give that a try and see what you think.
