Maxillary Fibrosarc Success And Questions

Steve and all,
Zola is 11 yr old Golden dx'd fibrosarc 11/2007. She had maxillectomy without clean margins and I started working with her Feb 2008, at which time the tumor was quite large. She is still doing very well. I have used various combinations, depending on her pattern, of Hoxsey, SMS, Xin Yi San, XFZYT + E Zhu + San Leng, XCHT + YJ, plus SWXFY seasonally for pruritis. I have treated her every 4-8 weeks. She has had two palliative radiation treatments, the last one about 8 months ago.

Her tongue is nearly always lavendar with thick white coat, pulses choppy, superficial and wiry/slippery. She almost always has active GB points and signs of Blood Def with Damp Heat.

She recently had her carnaissal on that side extracted due to abscess/inflammation, and it stirred up the tumor to start growing again - it was pretty much getting smaller and smaller before that. Mass got very red and hot again, so I tried XFHMY with some of the other herbs. It has quieted down, but would love to know any other ideas.
Need to move and tonify blood, regulate damp, expel wind, clear heat. Mass is growing most in the nasal region now.

Thanks for your help. We are going to try IV Vit C which has cured a mammary mass in another dog locally, so if anyone has any experience with that, let me know.

Hi Marnee,

Whenever tumors get inflammed like that and are maxillary, I think of Si Miao San and Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin, the latter of which you are using. Particularly if the Stomach channel (which includes much of the maxillary region) is involved, these two formulas often do well. Certainly if you're getting some results with XFHMY, you might get more by adding in SMS, which works well with it.

Those are my thoughts, anyway. Also, although we're not ourselves using it, I do notice that dogs in our practice on IP-6 seem to have unusual longevity. So that might be a supplement to try. It seems to not interact with the formulas or any drugs that are used.

I have tried IV vitamin C for other tumors, but without success. So I'm not yet a convert, but my experience is limited to a handful of dogs.

I would be interested to hear your experience with IV vitamin C in this dog. I have had a few clients inquire about it but have not actually done it because when I talked to a doctor out East, who supposedly was one of the biggest proponents, to get a protocol, he was not overly encouraging and actually sounds like he doesn't much use it himself anymore. So that is my second hand experience. But I would love it if it worked and didn't cause side effects.
