Question Details
Substitution For Aconite
by jodivt - October 5, 2025
If I do not have access to formulas, or the formula I need, and have single herbs only, I can go to Chen and Chen and find the traditional recipe.
If I can not get aconite Fi Zi, what could I substitute. I know Gui Zhi and Rou Gui are warming, but more harmonizing and already in many of the formulas that also have Fu Zi.
Fu Zi and Rou Gui, and also Gan Jiang, Hu Jiao and Wu Zhu Yu both have beneficial cardiac actions. Fu Zhi and Rou Gui both have analgesic actions.
So I know it will depend on whether or not there is cardiac disease, whether or not you need warming of the interior.
Is there one herb that you think of as a replacement for Fu ZI? For example, what would you substitute for Fu Zi if you were compounding your own Ba Wei Di Huang Wan or Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan?

Hi Jodi,

I haven't been in that position, fortunately, as I don't have many suggestions you haven't already come up with. If there are no symptoms to guide you and you just want to deeply warm the interior and Rou Gui is in there already, then Gan Jiang might be the next best thing
