Reaction To Ruta Graveolens

Steve few quick questions

1. I put a 11 year old dog with severe djd all joints and bad ACL tear on Ruta Graveolens. He became pupd with accidents. What does this tell me about his imbalances ? T= pink P=middle deeep wiry confined. Soften with tonify BL40 and BL 23 and sedate BL22=Kidney def and damp ? Weather does not affect. We are using acupuncture to support while we hope the knee tightens up. Not asurgical conidate.

2. I am treating a 11 year old dog diagnosed with L7-S1 nerve sheath spinal tumor. He had full course of radiation . He was sent to me for acup to treat the weakness, cp def and neuropathy. BL 24 to BL 27 is warm and tissues are very tight- owrse area sacral iliac rt side. He is slowly improving. Has periods of normal then limps or hols leg up. He is on Bup and Kudzu, , fish oil, cats claw, and Xiao Hou Lou Dan. Active Bl 20 P=thin wiry , T= lavender red , improve tonify Bl 20=less wiry calmer pulse. Dog very active crazy energetic.
I know you are not suppose to use electro stim around cancer. But do you think it would be safe to run across the area ? in this situation ?

3. I treat a 4 year old cat who had a stone removed 2 years ago-it was ammonium urate. we had tryed to dissolve with no luck. The owners feed raw diets, I was concerned that with this stone it is too much protein. they tryed U/D diet for a while but stopped. He had a bout of hepatitis last year and recovered well. he is dominant. Looks great no active points I can find , pulse wiry, tongue pink , coat great , no temperature issues. What do you think about diets for him and should I treat similar to a shunt kitty. Will Three seeds help , we tryed this 2 years ago but the stone was probably too big then. What do you thinkl for herbs and diet ?

Hi Sue,

We've never seen PU/PD as a side effect to Ruta. I always assume 'side effects' are really patient symptoms, and that fits there. The points and PU/PD history sound an awful lot like Kidney deficiency. BL 22 is probably draining Damp. So I'd look at Rehmannia Eight to start with. We've also started using Withania (Ashwaghanda) for these Kidney deficiency old dogs and been pleased. If the cruciate tear is not complete, there should be an eventual pay off in the lameness department. I would normally assume that homeopathic Ruta is still going to be safe, though.

Electrostim in cancer cases is fine if we're talking about tiny currents and voltages. Maybe not the tumor itself, though. So I'd work on distal BL points perhaps. Whenever I see a neuro case with obvious stasis (lavender tongue, wiry pulse) that improves with tonification of BL 20, I consider it a Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang case until proven otherwise (by a lack of response). It's an important neuro formula in China, and we've even used it to reverse quadriplegia (no kidding...). So you may want to look that one up, or just give it a try.

For the stone cat, I would look at increasing liver blood flow as a means to reducing ammonium biurate levels. Xiao Yao San or even Dang Gui Shao Yao San are options. The latter is perhaps more helpful if the stone causes clinical signs of low grade cystitis. Both should help if we're on the right track.
