Question Details
TPLO Plate Infection
by sophiek - July 26, 2026
Hi Steve

I have a 14 year old Labradoodle patient who I have been treating for OA and back pain. He has had a recurrent TPLO plate infection - two episodes over last 12 months. The surgery was done about 3-4 years ago. The specialists are recommending plate removal due to biofilm (long course of antibiotics not recommended) which the owner really doesn't want to put the dog through. He is really well otherwise and responding well to acupuncture.
He is a Damp dog, diet has been changed from kibble to fresh food.
I'm wondering if there would be a herbal formula that could be helpful to clear the TPLO plate infection? Would Hoxsey/Boneset or XHLD be helpful?

Thanks for your help,
Sophie

Hi Sophie,

If the patient is chilly and if the infection is not attended by much inflammation, then XHLD may help.

If there is more heat and/or inflammation, then people have used Xian Fang Huo Ming Yin (Angelica and Mastic) to combat osteomyelitis successfully (even in horses).

Hoxsey and Boneset would pair well with XFHMY, especially if patient has Heat signs. Boneset has a strong anti-inflammatory effect on the bone interior. XFHMY and Hoxsey are antimicrobial while the berberine in Hoxsey combats biofilms, so in addition to improving circulation, there is a scientific basis for expecting a benefit from using those two products.

Lastly, if you have access to homeopathic remedies, then I have used Mercurius solubilis 30C to resolve deep-seated bone inflammation. I've most often used it with Boneset (which is Heat clearing) but it can be used with XHLD as well.

Hopefully, this helps!

Steve
