Question Details
Liver And Thyroid Values On Route Lab Work
by Hen4761@gmail.com - October 15, 2026
Hi Steve,

I have a seven year-old, male neutered, golden retriever who presented for routine lab work two days ago. His liver values have been either low normal or slightly below the normal reference range for the past 3 lab work dates, along with his decreasing thyroid levels. He is asymptomatic other than seasonal allergies. Do you think, without any further testing, that this could be a case of blood deficiency? And if so, would you recommend starting with Cessorex vs Happy Wanderer? He is not on a whole food diet despite my recommendations.

I was unable to attach pictures here or in the case studies, but I tried! I’m sorry :)

ALT (18-121): (10/14/26: 20) (9/3/25: 14) (8/3/21: 48)
AST (16-55): (10/14/26: 15) (9/3/25: 19)
ALP (5-160): (10/14/26: 88) (9/3/25: 60). (8/3/21: 17)
BUN (9-31); (10/14/26: 13). (9/3/25: 11). (8/3/21: 16)
ALB (2.7-3.9): (10/14/26: 3.3) (9/3/25: 3.5) (8/3/21: 3.1)
HCT (41-60): between 49.5-52.2 the last 3 dates as above
WBC (5.8-16.2): (10/14/26: 7.3). (9/3/25: 5.9). (8/3/21: 10.95)
Thyroid (1-4): (10/14/26: 0.9). (9/3/25: 1.1). (10/14/20: 1.3)

And the remainder of the cbc and chemistries were all WNL

Thank you in advance,

Heather Nickel

Hi Heather,

Yes, those low liver enzyme levels would suggest Liver Blood deficiency. Reduced hepatic circulation can result in hypothyroidism at least being aggravated (since T4 is de-iodinated in various organs including the liver). A TSH would tell you if the thyroid levels were actually adequate or really too low. Checking anti-thyroid antibodies would tell you if there was an immune-mediated pathogenesis to the hypothyroidism. I'm wondering if the low thyroid is perhaps a driver of low liver metabolism.

At the very least, try Happy Wanderer or the Natural Path equivalent of Xiao Yao San (Rambling Ease Combination). If antibody levels are high and there is an immune mediated pathogenesis to the thyroid issues, then Cessorex is more appropriate (along with a meat-and-vegetable real food diet with probiotics added).

Hopefully, this helps you out

Steve
