Question Details
Orijen Food
by Rose Mary - October 26, 2009
Hello Steve,

I have a few animals that are being feed Orijen diet with favorable results. I realize that you participated in the development of this diet.

What are your thoughts on feeding this diet to a cat that has been previously diagnosed with struvite crystals and/or blocked who are currently being fed Hill's c/d or Waltham's Urinary s/o?

Thanks,
Rose Mary

Hi Rose Mary,

We've had good results with Orijen in FUS. That is, it does not seem to promote crystal formation despite not containing added acidifiers. I'm assuming the high protein content is adding sufficient acidification. I also believe I recall, however, perhaps one or two cats over the previous couple of years that developed struvite urolithiasis on Orijen. So it's not fool proof. But in general, I expect it to have a protective effect and to not have a stone-forming effect.
