Multiple Systems Affected

Chicha is a 6 yo SF Oriental shorthair with a history of lymphoma, urolith, and heart murmur. Her lymphoma presented as a swelling of her left jaw. Abd U/S shows splenic involvement. FNA of SQ mass and spleen show high grade LSA; liver FNA normal. She has a solitary large cystolith. Her murmur was first noticed 1 year ago, echo shows no structural abnormalities. She has mod-severe dental dz. She is receiving chemo (pred, vincristine, cytoxan, adriamycin) and appears to be in remission per her oncologist.
When I examined her, she was BAR, with a dark pink to purple tongue and deep, strong pulses. Her owner describes her as talking a lot, demands to be the center of attention, and has a strong character. She is neither a warm nor cold seeker. Her owner would like to add herbs that will not interfer with her chemo. I started her on Wholly Immune and Chih-ko and Curcuma. The final hitch in the story is that the owner is moving to London in a couple of weeks. What chinese herbs would you recommend for Chicha? Do you know any veterinary acupuncturists or herbalists in London?

Hi Carol,

Cats should only have weak pulses. When they are strong, there is an excess - either of Heat or Stasis. It seems the history and tongue support Stasis. We can look at the splenic mass, impending heart issues and subQ swelling as manifestations of it. There are many options for treatment, probably necessitating a certain amount of trial and error. I'm not sure you'll have time for it all. Given that you've got a Blood mover on board already, perhaps the best addition would be Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum). It is strongly anti-cancer, can treat cardiac and splenic issues, and has an affinity for the submandibular region, which is associated with the Shao Yang historically.

As for who to see in London, I'm not sure on that. I guess she can just ask around when she gets there.

Thanks, Steve. I will add Minor Bupl. I didn't know cats were only supposed to have weak pulses.

I looked on the IVAS site and there are a few CVAs in London, so she'll probably see one of them.
