ST Heat

I've been reading my new Chen and Chen - always trouble!

I have a cat with severe gingivitis, a voracious appetite with rare vomiting and history of cystitis. On PE his pulse is rapid and slippery, his tongue is purple/red. He has heat at BL 20, 22 and around 25. I've had him on SMS for the past 6 months. And while his urinary signs have been fine, his gingivitis has worsened and his appetite has gotten out of control (he's lost a couple of pounds too). Labwork has to wait a couple of months, but he does not look like a hyperthyroid cat - yet. So I was reading about an herbal formula called Gan Lu Yin (sweet dew decoction) that mainly addresses ST heat. Do you have any experience with this formula.

HI Brenda,
Sorry not Steve, but you may want to look at Qing Wei San (Clear the Stomach Powder). It's on pg 186 of the Ehling book. It clears Stomach fire, but also supports the Yin, which may be a little depleted in your cat. Be careful of the Evergreen version as it has gypsum, which may be too cooling - I had Mona make it from the recipe in the Ehling book.

I haven't used Gan Lu Yin either, but agree with Marnee that you may have both Damp Heat and Yin deficiency going on. The Huang Bai in SMS is probably what took care of the Damp Heat in the cystitis, but Yin deficiency (dry Heat) was aggravated by its drying nature. SMS was actually developed to deal with these delicate patients, where chronic Damp Heat had damaged the body's healthy moisture reserves, or Yin, but sometimes is itself too drying.

The formula Marnee mentioned is a good one. You could even test this theory with another formula, Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan, which you may even have on the shelf. It's a good hyperthyroid formula, but you don't need to be hyperthyroid for it to do good. It still has the Huang Bai that corrected the cystitis, but the rest of the formula is cooling but carefully hydrating.
